Photo Gallery: Orioles Beats Mariners, 7-4; Move to 2-1 On The Season...

Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Oriole! s; Camden Yards, Baltimore, Md. - April 4, 2008

The Orioles won 7-4 last night, thanks to timely hitting, pitching and making the most of their opportunities over the Seattle Mariners.

Veteran pitcher Steve Trachsel put in a solid effort, as he went a little over five innings and gave up two runs. Homers by Melvin Mora and Kevin Millar along with a big night by Ramon Hernandez made a huge difference.

Despite Seattle scoring two runs in the ninth and a potential for disaster, George Sherill came in and put things to rest.

The Weekend That Was; Our Shortstop Problem...

After a successful home stand where they won an incredible six out of seven, the Orioles are now on the road on a nine-game interleague swing.

Well, the Birds' first stop had them in part of America's heartland – Wisconsin – where they kicked off a three game set against the Milwaukee Brewers. Baltimore won on Friday night; however, they got kicked around in the final two games of the series and are now in a two-game skid as they have go into Chicago to face the Cubs.

Lest we forget, the Cubs swept the AL Central leading White Sox over the weekend in the inter-city rivalry.

The Milwaukee series may have exposed some of the Orioles' weaknesses -- young pitchers who are still learning to be consistent on this level (item: Garrett Olson and Daniel Cabrera), not being able to do much with hitters in scoring position and a bullpen that has had a lot of pressure put on them.

Needless to say, the Orioles have been playing well; however, ! their weaknesses may undo the success they have had so far.

One of the glaring problems in their lineup has been shortshop, and this weekend the team released Freddie Bynum. Obviously, he was not doing the job (he was batting under .200), and was versatile, but being unable to hit at the major level cost him his job.

Alex Cintron will be the shortstop, as he's better at the plate than Bynum or Hernandez ever was; however, his glove is suspect along with his range. In addition, will his throwing arm, which has been a problem, hold up?

I expect MacPhail to make a move for a better, everyday shortstop in the weeks ahead. The shortstop position has been a problem offensively all season, and something needs to be done.

Nats Fans Are Not Happy With MASN and the O's; Huff A Silver Slugger...

Well, although the new jerseys are a hit with most Oriole fans in one shape or another, down the Parkway, it's a different story.

Yes, some fans of the Nationals are none too pleased that MASN aired the Orioles rally and jersey unveiling, while the Nats -- who too had new uniforms unveiled -- didn't have any coverage on the network.

With all due respect to Nats fans, I think some of the anger is misguided. MASN is a Baltimore-centric station -- I'm in agreement there 100% percent -- however, I'd be more angry at the Washington organization for not doing more to promote, jazz up an event and get som! e of the players in town.

The Baltimore organization went all out for this one, and you can't give them enough credit. While I can understand Nationals fans frustrations, I don't think Washington's jersey event even matches the significance of what went on in Baltimore.

I was not at the ESPN Zone in DC, but the Baltimore Orioles put on an *event*, the media had umpteen stories on the jerseys, players were *actually* brought in (not just one guy),and it was promoted heavily -- alas, I'm not sure the Nationals put in a fraction of the same effort or had the media bandwagon on it.

The Orioles made their event important and there was a whole back story to it ("Baltimore" on the jerseys and building fan discontent). The Nationals, as much as we love them, more or less wanted to sell more merchandise and make a change, well to make a change ! (specifically branding).

I have not heard of the Na! tionals having a fan fest yet (there was not in '08) -- but if they do, MASN should cover it much like what they did with Orioles in the spring.

Oriole Aubrey Huff today won the Silver Slugger as a DH, and I'm sure he could not be any happier. After struggling in 2007, he came on fire in 2008 with a .304 average, 32 home runs, and 108 RBIs.

I've been tough on him for his statements made earlier in the year; however, the award is well deserved, and congratulations.

Finally, former Oriole manager and coach Sam Perlozzo has found found employment up the road -- in Philadelphia...

Twins Owner Carl Pohlad Passes Away

I just read this online, but longtime Minnesota Twins owner and billionaire, Carl Pohlad passed away today at 93.

From what I know of him from talking with some Twins fans over the years, they have called him cheap, greedy and demonize him for his part in the attempted contraction of the team.

In light of it all; however, you cannot discount the success that's he had in life and with the Minnesota organization.

Rest in peace, Carl Pohlad.

Alex Rodriguez Allegedly Tested Positive for Steroids in '03

Sports Illustrated's Selena Roberts and David Epstein this morning report that Alex Rodriguez tested positive for PED/steroid use in 2003.

In 2003, when he won the American League home run title and the AL Most Valuable Player award as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids, four sources have independently told Sports Illustrated.

Rodriguez's name appears on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball's '03 survey testing, SI's sources say. As part of a joint agreement with the MLB Players Association, the testing was conducted to determine if it was necessary to impose mandatory random drug testing across the major leagues in 2004.

Orioles Snap Five Game Skid; The Draft

The Orioles snapped a five game losing streak as Brad Bergesen perhaps had his best start in the majors to date as he pitched eight shutout innings of five-hit ball and they beat the Seattle Mariners, 3-1 last night at Camden Yards.

Baltimore's youngsters came through that night as Nolan Reimold had a solo home run in the fifth inning, and followed up with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Adam Jones plated in a run in the first inning to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead.

The game was highlighted by some weird plays; however, there was none stranger than what happened in the first inning. With two outs in the frame, it looked Melvin Mora had a home run over the left field wall, but Seattle left fielder Endy Chavez got a read on the ball and seemed to have it in his glove -- after he leaped. However, a fan in the stands extended his glove over Chavez's and the ball landed in the stands; therefore, Mora was originally given credit for a homer, but Chavez and Se! attle manager Don Wakamatsu urged the umpires to review the call and the home run was overturned.

George Sherrill earned his 12th save, but gave up a RBI single to Jose Lopez in the ninth inning.

Dave Trembley to Be Given Another Season

From the Baltimore Sun:

According to multiple team sources, the Orioles will pick up Trembley's option for the 2010 season, a surprising development that ends weeks of speculation that heightened with each Orioles loss.

The decision comes one day after the Orioles ended a 13-game losing streak -- the third longest in team history -- and with three games remaining in the season, the Orioles' 12th straight losing campaign.

Several people in the organization felt that the losing streak would ultimately be the final factor in MacPhail's decision to not retain Trembley. However, MacPhail, who made a couple of in-season moves that weakened the team in the present but he hopes will strengthen it in the future, felt that Trembley deserved another opportunity to prove that he could be the Orioles' long-term answer.

Good for him. The right! , and equitable decision was made. Even better, the decision was made before the season officially ended -- not after. There was no use stringing Dave Trembley through waiting for a decision, and to have the media onslaught on him any longer. He's now got piece of mind and can now focus on keeping his job rather than wondering if his days are numbered.

Trembley deserved the opportunity to prove himself next season with an actual, healthy, and viable major league roster.

There was no way anyone could have saved the Orioles from such a dramatic fall in the second half of 2009; therefore, I think improvement will need to take place in 2010, or this time Trembley will actually be gone.

Top UFA Goalies Available This Summer

So far we've taken a look at all of the Top Forwards & Defensemen that will be available this summer as Unrestricted Free Agents.

Now we'll take a look at the top UFA Goaltenders that will be available come July 1st.

The amount of +'s or -'s next to each player indicates whether I think that the player's contract next season will be more or less than the current contract and by how much. If a player has one + or - next to his name then I think he's looking at a minor salary increase or decrease. Several +'s or -'s indicates that I think the player is looking at a significant increase/decrease. Also, I'm not taking! into account that certain players will give a hometown discount, all salary expectations I'm indicating are if the player were to hit the open market. The list below is in the order of attention that I think that each player will be given, not necessarily in the order of best UFA available.

Rangers Offseason Plans: RFAs & UFAs

For some teams the season continues for at least another four games, but the Rangers season is now over. On the one hand Ranger fans can't be too surprised that they were beaten in the first round by the Washington Capitals, as they were extreme underdogs in the series. But, at the same time, this is New York and you are expected to win all of the time. Unfortunately, Glen Sather did not build a team that was ready to make a run for the Stanley Cup this season. Maybe even more unfortunate is the fact that with some of the signings he's made in the past two years, he has severely hampered the chances of the Rangers posing a significant threat in the near future.

I know that this topic has been beaten like a dead horse, but it needs to be. The Rangers salary structure is severely demented. The Rangers who make the most money per season are not the team's best players. In the salary cap era, in order to be competitive you need ! to have your top players producing and get good production from your younger players while they are still on their entry level contracts. In the Rangers situation, their best players are the younger players who are making the least money. Although it's a good sign for the future of the Rangers, the fear has to be that because of other contracts that they are obligated to, they may not have the salary cap room to sign their younger players to the contracts that they are going to be asking for.

Next season captain Chris Drury is scheduled to make just over $8M, factor in Scott Gomez at another $8M and the Rangers are paying two centers the salary that an elite #1 center in the NHL gets. The problem is, neither Drury or Gomez are capable of being #1 line centers, essentially the Rangers have over $14M in cap room allocated to two players who are being paid at least $3M per season more than they are actually worth.

On the blue line things aren't much prett! ier with Wade Redden ($6.5M cap hit) and Michal Rozsival ($5M ! cap hit) getting paid much more than their play this season merited. In fact, Marc Staal ($0.82M cap hit) who is easily the team's best defenseman is by far the lowest paid blue liner on the team. The Rangers cap situation is so bad that unless they make some significant moves this offseason, players who are deserving of another season on Broadway probably won't be offered a new contract. Paul Mara, one of the true character guys on the team who is also the team's grittiest defenseman probably won't be re-signed.

I'm sure that Glen Sather would pull pretty much any possible deal to clear the contract of Wade Redden off of the books (he's under contract for 5 more seasons!) The same has to be said for Chris Drury (3 more seasons) in my opinion, because even though he's the team captain, he hasn't lived up to expectations ever since coming to New York. Getting rid of even one of the monstrous contracts would ease a little bit of the pressure off of the salary cap problem. I! also think that even though Naslund only has one year left on his contract ($4M), he should be bought out this summer by Sather. Heck, it might even allow Sather to sign someone who can actually put the puck in the net!

Here's a look at the Rangers RFAs and UFAs and what I think Sather should do in each situation. I will be posting another article assessing possible UFAs that the Rangers should be targeting (players who aren't currently NYRs). Also, remember that the Rangers signed college Hobey Baker winner Matt Gilroy last week to a two year (one way) contract with a cap hit of $1.87M.

Restricted Free Agents:

Ryan Callahan - he made $600k this season, an absolute bargain (a real rarity in New York). He'll be one of the first guys that Sather re-signs this summer. He's a gritty winger who has shown that he can score ! at the NHL level and I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a c! onsisten t 30 goal scorer. I think that Sather should look to lock him up for at least 2-3 years and he should be able to get the deal done for less than $1.5M per season. Guaranteed to be back in 09-10

Brandon Dubinsky - Another guy that Sather will be on the phone with right away negotiating a new deal with. Dubinsky is a future Rangers captain in my opinion. He's mature beyond his years, willing to stick up for his teammates and a physical presence on the ice. Maybe not going to get much more than 20 goals per season but he brings so much to the table. Another guy who was paid only $635k last season and will be looking for a decent pay raise. Because Dubinsky didn't have a great season (goal wise) this might be a great bargaining chip in Sather's favor and he should try and sign Dubinsky to as long a deal as possible at a low price because I think that Dubisnky is only going to get better (especially under Tortorella) and when hi! s numbers increase next season and the year after, so will his value. Looking for at least a three year deal and I think the Rangers could sign him for less than $2M per season. Guaranteed to be back in 09-10

Lauri Korpikoski - In my opinion the jury is still out on Korpikoski, he made almost $1M last season but wasn't given significant minutes, spending most of the season on the third and fourth lines. He's shown some flashes of having a goal-scoring touch but those flashes have been few & far between. He's a decent penalty killer and seems like a hard worker. Maybe Sather should see what kind of market there is for Korpikoski, because I don't know if he'll ever be a top-6 NHL forward and he's already going to be seeking over $1M per season. NY won't let him walk but they shouldn't be offering much more than the bare minimum that they have to in order to re-sign him and I wouldn't be offering more than a two year deal! if I was Sather.

Corey P otter - Potter spent most of the season in Hartford but got a couple of call ups and saw limited action in the few games he did spend with the Rangers. He's only 25 so the Rangers will probably re-sign him for depth and keep him in Hartford. Then again with the large contracts that the Rangers have and the amount of players that the Rangers have to re-sign, Potter could be a cheap option as a 6th defenseman. The Rangers have a lot of prospects on the blue line, but I would expect Potter to remain Rangers property.

Fredrik Sjostrom - Sjostrom along with Betts formed the best penalty killing duo in the NHL this season. Sjostrom has unbelievable speed and is a really hard working player. Unfortunately he doesn't have much of a scoring touch. With the cap situation the way it is this could be a toss up. I'd like to see Sjostrom back because he puts his body on the line for the team every single shift but if he is asking ! for anymore than the $840k he made this season he won't fit in Sather's plans. Could be back on a one year deal for similar money, but not much more than he's making now.

Nikolai Zherdev - The first few weeks of the season this would've been a no-brainer. Zherdev has an unbelievable skill set and is one of the most gifted players in the NHL in terms of being able to stickhandle the puck. But, the problem with Zherdev is that often he can go unnoticed for long periods of time.... games at a time. He made $3.25M this past season and there's no way he comes back to New York if he's seeking similar money to his past contract. When the Rangers traded for Antropov this summer many reports were that it would be a decision between either Antropov (who is a UFA) or Zherdev, I still think that's the case - if I had a choice I'd take Antrpov in a heartbeat. He spent a lot of time in Tortorella's "dog house" down the stretch and disap! peared in the playoffs. 50/50 chance of him being back in New ! York nex t season & if he does come back it has to be for less money.

Unrestricted Free Agents:

Nikolai Antropov - As I said before I think that it's either Antropov or Zherdev and I'd prefer Antropov. The guy is huge, although that doesn't mean everything, for the Rangers it should be a significant factor because over the past decade one of their main problems has been size. Sometimes I wish he used his body a little more, but he still has the ability to use his strength and size to make plays with the puck. He made $2.1M last season, he'll be seeking a pay raise, but I think that if Sather can get a relatively short-term deal done for $3M or less then he should do it.

Mark Bell - Spent the end of the season in Hartford. I hope that for some reason the Rangers don't decide that Bell should be on the 4th line and choose to re-s! ign him and let Orr walk. I have no problem re-signing Bell so that he can play in Hartford and provide depth for the Rangers in case he's severely needed. But, I don't think that he's capable of playing 82 games in the NHL and being effective.

Blair Betts - Rough ending to the season for Betts (broken orbital bone & concussion) and possibly has played his last game as a NYR. Along with Freddie Sjostrom he formed the NHL's best penalty killing unit - which has to work in his favor. Betts was also the team's best faceoff man. But, it appears that Artem Anisimov is ready to make a jump from the AHL to the NHL and if that's the case then Betts' job could be on the line. One of the main things working in Betts' favor is that last season's contract of $615k is relatively affordable for the contributions he makes. Sather will be watching how Betts progresses from that concussion he sustained in game 6 of the playoffs. Could ! be back in New York, but not a guarantee. I'd say there's a 70! % chance of Betts returning.

Paul Mara - I have to admit I'm a Paul Mara fan, he had a very good season this year in New York. I think that he changed his style of play (becoming more aggressive) and as a result became a really valuable part of the Rangers blue line. Mara is a real team guy and always sticking up for his teammates. The Rangers don't have any physically intimidating blue liners, Mara might be the closest that they'll get to that. He made $1.95M last season and I think that he may have played himself into a few extra dollars with another team. The Rangers won't have the cap room to increase his salary and will likely try and groom one of their young defensive prospects who will be making less money to replace him. Don't see him re-signing but would like if he did.

Derek Morris - The bottom line is Morris won't be back. He wasn't a bad addition down the stretch but h! e did nothing in the playoffs. He was supposed to help the PP because he has a big shot, but that didn't work out as planned. On this Rangers team he's the 4th best defenseman at best and at $3.95M/season he is way too highly priced for the Rangers.

Colton Orr - The Rangers must bring back Orr. He is a top 3 fighter in the league and for those of you who think that it's no longer a part of the game (take a look back a few days ago when Brashear destroyed Betts...I have no doubt that doesn't happen with Orr on the ice). The Rangers are a small team, they will get run all season long unless they have someone who can actually fight. Adding another Voros type player who can't fight will not help. Orr has improved dramatically since coming to New York and is no longer a liability when he's out there on the ice. Not to mention, he rarely takes a minor penalty, which is something that most other NHL heavies do on a regular basis.! Plus, the best thing about Orr is that he loves to fight. He ! made $55 0k last season and I see no reason why Sather shouldn't be able to get him back in Blue for another two seasons at $650k per year (or less).

Patrick Rissmiller - Won't be back next season, if in fact he is a UFA (several websites claim he's a UFA, others say that he signed a 3yr deal last summer). One of Sather's mistake signings from last summer, hopefully it was just a one year deal. If not, he'll just continue to play in the AHL.

Steve Valiquette (Update: Re-Signed 5/1/09) - Vally knows his role and is a very capable NHL backup goalie. He had a one year deal for $725k and Sather should be able to sign Valiquette to another deal with similar financial terms. It seems like Lundqvist and Valiquette have a good relationship, which is important. I see no reason why Valiquette wouldn't be back, unless Sather thinks there is a better op! tion out there for similar money (this summer's top UFA goalies).

Callahan & Zherdev Among Players Going to Arbitration

According to TSN:

Wingers Nikolai Zherdev and Ryan Callahan of the New York Rangers were among 20 players who elected to take their teams to salary arbitration, the NHL Players' Association said Sunday.

The only other club to have two players go that route were the Phoenix Coyotes, who are set to have hearings with forwards Nigel Dawes and Daniel Winnik.

Joining them were defenceman James Wisniewski of the Anaheim Ducks; Thrashers winger Colby Armstrong; forward Matt Hunwick of the Boston Bruins; Buffalo left winger Clarke MacArthur; Carolina Hurricanes forward Tuomo Ruutu; defenceman Aaron Johnson of the Chicago Blackhawks; Columbus defenceman Marc Methot; Detroit winger Jiri Hudler; blue liner Denis Grebeshkov of the Edmonton Oilers; Minnesota center Kyle Brodziak; Montreal centre Tomas Plekanec; New Jersey Devils forward Travis Zajac; Islander! s winger Nate Thompson; Lightning defenceman Matt Smaby; Canucks forward Kyle Wellwood; and Washington Capitals defenceman Milan Jurcina.

The deadline for teams to decide to take players to salary arbitration is Monday at 5pm et. Hearings will be held in Toronto from July 20 to August 4.

Atlantic Division Breakout Players

Full article posted in my weekly column over at InsideHockey.com

Going into each new season there are expectations by the teams and by the fans that certain players will have a breakout season. Last year, Jeff Carter of the Philadelphia Flyers had a major breakout season, finishing with 46 goals and 84 points. Prior to that in his previous three NHL seasons, his best season was 2007-08 when he scored 29 goals and finished with 53 points.

A look at each team in the Atlantic Division and what! players are most likely to make the 2009-10 season a memorable one for their personal careers:

New Jersey Devils
With John Madden leaving via Free Agency and Bobby Holik retiring, Rod Pelley could get a lot more ice time for New Jersey. Pelley spent the entire 2008-09 season in the AHL but was mentioned by Lou Lamoriello as Madden's replacement shortly after the former Selke Trophy winner left for Chicago.

Usually when thinking of "breakout" seasons immediately goals and points come to mind. But, in typical Devils fashion Pelley's season will more than likely be judged on how well he shuts down the other team's top lines.

Honorable Mention: David Clarkson

(Update: I think that with the Devils signing Rob Nidermayer that effectively kills the chances of Pelley being this year's NJ breakout player. Look for Clarkson to be the guy that hits 25 g! oals)

New York! Islande rs

Last year in his rookie season Kyle Okposo had 18 goals and 39 points in 65 games. This season, if all goes according to plan on the Island, Okposo will be riding shotgun for John Tavares. That can mean only one thing - more offensive output from the second year player from St. Paul, Minnesota. If Okposo does spend the season playing alongside Tavares, a duo that could be together for years to come, then expect Okposo to hit the 25-goal plateau.

Honorable Mention: Blake Comeau

New York Rangers

Brandon Dubinsky (assuming he gets a contract signed, he is still a RFA) has already had the privilege of playing with Jaromir Jagr, one of the best hockey players to ever put on a pair of skates. This season Dubinsky is once again likely to be playing center for one of the true superstars in the NHL, Marian Gaborik.

If Dubisnky does in! fact get the number one center position (as many are predicting) he'll likely be feeding the puck to Gaborik on a regular basis on both the power play and at even strength. In 2007-08 he had 14 goals and last season he finished with 41 points. In 2009-10 he'll surpass both of those marks.

Honorable Mention: Chris Higgins

Pittsburgh Penguins

Despite playing in only 45 games last season for the Penguins, Alex Goligoski finished the season with 6 goals and 20 points. This year with Rob Scuderi and Hal Gill departing Pittsburgh, Goligoski is likely to play in many more games and get more ice time.
On top of that, after this season Sergei Gonchar is an unrestricted free agent. The Penguins are already rumored to be trying to sign Gonchar to an extended contract. But, it's possible that this season the Penguins will see if Goligoski could eventually be Gonchar's replacement, a! s Goligoski is known to be an offensive defenseman. Considerin! g that t he Penguins signed him this summer to a three year contract extension for $5.5M, they obviously think pretty highly of him.

Philadelphia Flyers

Ask pretty much any Flyers fan who they expect to have a breakout season this year and chances are than nine out of ten will say "Claude Giroux." Giroux was the Flyers first round pick in 2006 and in 42 games last season finished with 27 points. He was also arguably the Flyers best player in the playoffs.
The one thing working against Giroux is that the Flyers are very deep at the forward position. With both Carter and Richards ahead of him at center, it looks John Stevens will have Giroux penciled in to start the season as the team's third line center. Giroux is known more as a play-maker than a goal scorer, so who Stevens puts on his wings could certainly effect how many points Giroux finishes the season with. Don't be surprised if Giroux gets bumped up to one of the top two lines ! and moved to the wing.

Kualifikasi Piala Dunia 2009/2010 | Pemain Barca Dapat Perlakuan Khusus?

Xavi

Sederhana saja," pungkas Del Bosque.

FIFA World Cup 2010:
No World Cup Without Argentina

Argentina national football team must win the next match in FIFA world cup qualification 2010, Conmebol Zone. World Cup qualification in conmebol zone just only remains two matches, one of them will be held in this weekend in Argentina.

This match will be the dead match for Argentina. If Argentina wins, it will keep the chance to go to south Africa. If Argentina will be beaten in this match, so FIFA world cup 2010 in south Africa will be held without a superstar football team, Argentina.

We will'nt see an attractive performances from Argentinian Superstar such as Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero, Sebastian Veron, Javier Zanetti and more in the FIFA world cup 2010. It will be the worst moment in football event.

But, everything is depend on the Argentina's last two matches. Diego Maradona must ef! fort to bring his squad to win the match. Argentina is the legendary football team in the world, it will be very bad if Argentina can't go to the south of Africa. and it will be the worst record in Argentina football history.

Is Guti The Answer To The Attacking Midfielder We Need?

By PoshSpur
For THBN

British tabloid, The Daily Mirror, has published another amazing story. This time, we are in for Real Madrid's attacking midfielder Guti and Manchester United's French striker Louis Saha.

Here is what the paper said:

"Spurs have turned their attention to Guti and seem to be at the head of the queue for a player who has been with Real all his career.

Spurs boss Martin Jol is also ready to make a cheeky bid to land Louis Saha on loan from Manchester United."

Can this be true? We have been linked with every player and his dog this season.

Would Real really sell for only £5 million? Would Guti join a team like Spurs, who are not in any European competitions?

The Saha story may have some substance to it though. I have heard the same story from another reliable source.

Th! e fact is that Spurs are in talks with a club over an experienced player. We have no idea who the club or the player is.

Many of you (including me) would love to see Ajax star Westley Sneijder in our young team, but then again, Guti would do also.

Is this just another ploy to sell newspapers? I hope not. Everyone realises that we are in urgent need of not just an attacking midfielder, but an experienced one also. Does Guti fill that description? I'll let you decide.

Opening Day Coverage

Spurs season ticket holder & new THBN columnist, Chris Rowning, will be at the game against Boro today and will be reporting on our opening day exploits (via his Blackberry).

We've read (as I am sure have most of you) that Berbatov has handed in a transfer request.

If Dimi does start for us today, then I can't see the story the Sun published as being accurate. After all, why play a player that clearly doesn't want to play for you?

What I do feel is true, is that Arshavin will sign for us soon, therefore allowing Berbatov to move to Old Trafford.

I do think that it's 'when' and not 'if' Berbatov will leave Tottenham Hotspur.

When Dimi leaves, we'll definitely need another striker in though as Pekhart surely isn't ready for first-team action.

I would personally like us to bid for Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz. He's 27, well built, has proven Premier League experience and class and would cost around £17 mil! lion.

Ryan Mason

A product of the Tottenham Hotspur Academy, Ryan Mason, 18, has scored an impressive 39 goals in 47 games (4 games starting on the bench) for the academy.

Mason started off in midfield, but was ushered into an attacking midfielder/striker role by Clive Allen after he scored 11 goals in his first full season.

Ryan Mason is extremely pacey and has an abundance of skill.

We expect him to make several first-team appearances in the coming season, especially in the early League Cup rounds.

"Oddo: Saya Bertahan Di Milan"

Abbiati: Leonardo Memotivasi Milan

Debut Zhirkov Rontokkan Milan

BALTIMORE — Gelandang Yuri Zhirkov tampil gemilang dalam debutnya bersama Chelsea. Zhirkov mencetak gol kemenangan "The Blues" atas tim Italia AC Milan dengan skor 2-1 pada laga pramusim di M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Amerika Serikat, Jumat (24/7) waktu setempat atau Sabtu pagi WIB.
Chelsea yang menuai dua kemenangan di laga awal langsung menerapkan permainan cepat sejak menit pertama. Perubahan pun terjadi ketika Didier Drogba menyarangkan gol indah pada menit ketujuh.
Skor pun tetap 2-1 untuk kemenangan "The Pensioners".

Susunan pemain:
AC Milan: Kalac; Oddo, Nesta (Onyewu 66), Thiago (Kaladze 77), Zambrotta (Jankulovski 74); Pirlo! (Gattuso 71); Flamini, Seedorf (Abate 63); Ronaldinho (Di Gennaro 78); Boriello (Zigoni 66), Pato (Inzaghi 80).
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa (Hutchinson 90), Ivanovic, Terry (c), A Cole; Mikel; Zhirkov (Mancienne 84), Belletti; Lampard; Anelka (Shevchenko 63), Drogba (Pizarro 74)

Laga Uji Coba AC Milan vs Benfica : Milan Diselamatkan Gol Bunuh Diri

MILAN - AC Milan nyaris kembali menelan kekelahan dalam laga ujicoba pra musim. Tertinggal sejak awal babak kedua, Rossoneri akhirnya menahan imbang Sporting Lisbon setelah pemain lawan membuat gol bunuh diri.
Hingga turun minum skor masih sama kuat 0-0.

Flamini: Kartu As Kami Ronaldinho

Lagi, Galliani Jamin Posisi Leonardo

Milan sebetulnya bermain cukup baik. Sejak menit awal, mereka mendominasi penguasaan bola dan menekan lini pertahanan lawan.
Namun, mereka memang kesulitan membuka palang pertahanan tuan rumah. Milan pun nyaris tanpa peluang. Buntunya serangan membuat Milan terus menambah daya gedor.
Akibatnya, barisan belakang pun merenggang demi mendukung serangan.
Memasuki babak kedua, Milan kembali berhasil mendominasi penguasaan bola.
Tekanan Milan ! terlihat mulai merusak konsentrasi bek Atalanta. Permainan Ronaldinho dkk pun semakin efektif.
Meski terus gagal, Milan terus berusaha. Akhirnya, setelah menanti hingga menit ke-83, Milan berhasil menyamakan kedudukan melalui Ronaldinho. memanfaatkan umpan Alessandro Nesta, Ronaldinho mengirim bola ke sudut kanan atas gawang Atalanta. Tak mau kehilangan momen, Milan mencoba memanfaatkan waktu tersisa mencari gol kemenangan. Namun, skor 1-1 tetap bertahan hingga peluit berbunyi panjang.

Susunan pemain:
Atalanta: Consigli; Ma! nfredini, Pellegrino, Bellini, Garics; Guarante, Radavanovic, ! Valdes ( Peluso 73), Padoin; Doni, Tiribochi (Ceravolo 56)
Milan: Storari; Favalli, Nesta, Zambrotta, Abate; Gattuso (Ambrosini 66), Pirlo, Seedorf, Flamini (Ronaldinho 46); Huntelaar, Pato

Gerrard hails Benitez's methods

Former Valencia chief Benitez arrived at Anfield in 2004 and has since guided the Reds to UEFA Champions League glory and an FA Cup win, while also transforming a struggling side into genuine Premier League title contenders.

England international Gerrard has been an inspirational on-field influence throughout the Spaniard's five-year tenure and has risen to a status as one of the best players in the world.

But the Liverpool skipper confesses that he found it difficult to adapt to Benitez's meticulous methods before realising that his manager's dedication is what is required for success.

"Even after five years with Rafa, I still feel I want to please him, that I want to impress him in every game I play," Gerrard told the Daily Mail.

Lucky
"The great managers are like that. There are a handful operating on a different level and I am lucky enough to play for two of them, Benitez and (England boss) Fabio Capello.

"It ! is when you see what they put in, some of the little things they spot, that you realise how hard they work. Rafa will make a point, and you'll be thinking, 'has this guy not got a life?' because it seems so minor, but it is what sets him apart.

"I can have a good game - tell you what, I'll be big-headed, say I've had a fantastic game - we've won 2-1 in the last minute and I've scored both.

"I come back into the dressing-room and I'm buzzing, bouncing off the walls, thinking, 'I feel good today', that is when Rafa comes up and starts talking about a throw-in when they changed the play and I pressed far too late. He'll say, 'if you want, we'll go out there and I'll show you'.

"Or you'll have a run of 10 games when you're in form and flying and he'll pop you a DVD of your recent play and it's broken up into sections good and bad. And you're thinking, 'hang on, bad? I didn't do anything wrong'. But you'll watch it and you're out of position in! one match, or you pressed late or you let a man go at a set-p! iece. Yo u wonder when the guy sleeps.

Danger
"At first when he did things like that, I'd be asking, 'has he not watched my last 150 games for Liverpool?' There is a danger that you think he has it in for you because he pulls you so much.

"When he arrived, he would keep saying to me, 'left foot, left foot' or I'd shoot and he would say, 'hit the target' and I'm thinking, 'look, mate, I'm trying to hit the target'.

"I would say to people, 'I'm 26 - if he doesn't think my left foot's working now, it's never going to work' but then a few weeks later I scored with my left and he came up with a little smile and said, 'lucky goal today, left foot and it hit the target' and then the penny dropped.

"Finally, I realised it was the way he helped push you on and as a player, you either recognised it or fought it and, with these guys, if you fight it there is only one winner."

AGUERO & MESSI E L'ARGENTINA VOLA

The FA Cup "Giant Killers" history - part 2

Spalletti: "Roma forte come l'anno scorso"

Samuel Eto'o scored a second-half stunner and his strike partner Diego Milito added a cheeky goal as Inter saw off a gritty Parma at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

The Cameroonian striker's goal - straight out of the top drawer - came at just the right time, with frustration setting in after seventy goalless minutes.

Two minutes short of the ninety, Il Principe tucked home Balotelli's cross to make sure of the points.

Chivu and Stankovic returned from international duty with the flu, forcing José Mourinho to make two chan! ges to the team that beat AC Milan 4-0 a fortnight ago. Santon slotted in at left-back while Vieira patrolled the right side of midfield with Zanetti filling the central role.

Eleven minutes into the match Inter had two quick chances to take the lead. Sneijder latched on to Eto'o's deflected cross and saw his snapshot parried by Mirante. Thiago Motta failed to find the target with his header from the resulting corner.

Parma's only meaningful chance of the opening forty-five fell to their captain Morrone, who wriggled into the box before sending a diagonal shot straight at Julio Cesar. Inter launched a fast counter-attack and Mirante kept out a fierce drive from Zanetti.

A goalless first half called for a change in formation and Mourinho threw on Balotelli in place of Thiago Motta. The nineteen-year-old Italian made an immediate impact as the Nerazzurri looked more dangerous coming forward.

Parma, though, were always a threat and Inter youth acade! my product Jonathan Biabiany made two teasing runs, pulling hi! s shot w ide after the second.

The breakthrough came in the 71st minute when Eto'o received from Balotelli and turned Lanzafame to create space to curl his brilliant shot beyond Mirante and into the top right corner.

Rene Krhin came on for Sneijder in the 78th minute and celebrated his competitive debut for Inter ten later when Milito controlled Balotelli's right-wing cross in the box and fired past Mirante with the outside of his right foot.

Masch doubt for weekend's game

Javier Mascherano is a major doubt for Liverpool's Premier League clash with Burnley at Anfield tomorrow.

The 25-year-old midfielder picked up a knock in Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Paraguay on Wednesday night.

Mascherano is having treatment but after playing two full 90 minutes for his country over the past week he is unlikely to be risked against the Clarets.

However, Lucas Leiva is expected to play after making the 6,000 mile trip home from South America.
Lucas was due back at Melwood today and having not featured in either of Brazil's World Cup qualifiers he is set to face Owen Coyle's side.

If Mascherano misses out, skipper Steven Gerrard is expected to drop into a central midfield role alongside Lucas.

Meanwhile, Rafa Benitez admits he faces a selection dilemma at left-back ahead of Liverpool's first league meeting with Burnley for 33 years.

Emiliano Insua has got the nod ahead of Andrea Dossena in the opening four matches but Fabio Aurelio is pressing for a recall.

The Brazilian has proved his fitness following knee surgery and Benitez believes the Reds have missed the 29-year-old.

"Fabio is a player with quality," he said. "His delivery into the box, especially when we play at home, is excellent. He provides good passes and crosses which is really important.

"He has no match fitness but he is much better and he hasn't been away with his country ! so he has been training hard. Fabio knows exactly what we expe! ct from him.

"Insua has been doing really well. He impressed last season when we needed him and it's the same this season.

"We have really good competition now on the left with Insua, Aurelio and Dossena.

"That means a headache for me but that's good. It's up to me to pick the right player."

Benitez also has a decision to make further forward with Yossi Benayoun, Albert Riera and Ryan Babel all vying for the left wing role.

Riera and Babel have both hit out at their lack of first team action so far this season. Babel even admitted he wants to join Ajax on loan in January but Benitez dismissed talk of the Dutchman moving on.

"I've already talked with Riera and that's not a problem and I will talk with Ryan and analyse the situation with him," he said. "What is clear is that if they want to play then they have to compete.

"Ryan has to perform for us. He has to be ready for this game or the next one because we! have a lot of games before January.

"I'm not thinking about the possibility of him going out on loan. I'm just thinking about getting the best out of him."

Benitez expects to have £18million signing Alberto Aquilani training before the end of the month.

Besiktas v Man Utd preview

Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson and a number of his senior players have confessed the manner of their 2-0 defeat in Rome at the hands of Barca still wrangles, with the Scot admitting he would love another final showdown with the Catalans this term.

United travel to Turkey on the back of their 3-1 win against Tottenham at White Hart Lane in what many described as their best performance of the season.

However the Premier League champions have been handed a tricky opening group with long distance flights to Turkey and Russia, along with what promises to be a tough test in Germany against Bundesliga champions Wolfsburg.

Besiktas will aiming to prove to be worthy opponents on home soil and will be determined to restore some pride after losing 3-0 to fierce rivals Galatasaray in the Istanbul derby on Saturday.

United have played against both Galatasaray and Fenerbache in Europe over the last 15 years and will have an idea of what to! expect in the Inonu Stadium. The Besiktas fans are sure to have the ground shaking come kick-off.

Dismal start
Despite often living in the shadow of city rivals Fenerbache and Galatasaray, Besiktas are Turkey's only representatives in the competition.

However the Black Eagles have begun this season dismally having taken just six points from their first five league games.

The hosts will have to do without defender Ibrahim Toraman due to a heel injury but other than that, Besiktas will be at full strength.

Besiktas goalkeeper Rustu Recber will be looking to banish memories of the last time he faced Wayne Rooney after the England striker put three goals past him on his United debut in a 6-2 win over Fenerbache at Old Trafford in 2004.

United will have to be wary of the attacking threat posed by Nihat Kahveci after he joined Besiktas in the summer following a successful seven year stay in Spain, playing for Real Socie! dad and Villarreal.

Meanwhile Besiktas will be look! ing to d o better than the last time they faced English opposition after they lost 8-0 to Liverpool at Anfield in 2007, a record Champions League loss.

United team news
Rio Ferdinand should keep his place after he came through the full 90 minutes at Spurs unscathed having missed the first four games of the season with a thigh injury.

John O'Shea was expected to miss the match against Spurs having returned from international duty with a calf complaint but he came through to complete the full game and he should start again.

Ferguson is likely to mix his squad up once more so Michael Carrick, Nani and Park Ji-Sung could all be pushing for a place in the starting line-up.

Goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar (hand), Gabriel Obertan (back), Rafael (shoulder) and Owen Hargreaves (knees) remain sidelined.
