REAL MADRID: COACH PELLEGRINI DAYS ARE COUNTED?

Vince Carter to the Spurs?

According to Stephen A. Smith, the Nets are shopping Vince Carter to the Spurs for expiring contracts. The Nets would get back Bruce Bowen, Michael Finley, Kurt Thomas and some throw in players. The Nets badly want to unload Vince's bloated contract so that they can make a run at LeBron James in 2010. This would be a great move for the Spurs. If they can pair Vince up with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili they would instantly become the favorites in the Western Conference. The move might push the Spurs into a luxury tax next year but I think it's worth it. The Spurs have a 2-3 year window with their c! urrent core of players and should take a shot at winning it all this year. The move would cost the Spurs about 40 million over the next 2 seasons and then they could unload Vince.

This would be a bad trade for the Nets. I know that they would get salary cap relief in the future but they wouldn't get any star caliber player back. The only way this works for the Nets is if they can convince LeBron, D Wade, Chris Bosh or Yao Ming to come to New Jersey in 2010.

The Ryan Blunder

Greg Ryan, after the U.S.'s 4-0 loss to Brazil in the Women's World Cup, really ought to go down as one of the dumber coaches in history, and if he doesn't, it will only be because of the profile of his sport. Solo thinks so too, and amid the caterwauling that she's betraying the team and speaking out of turn, does it even matter that she's 1,000 percent right?
"It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that. There's no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves. And the fact of the matter is, it's not 2004 anymore. It's not 2004. And it's 2007 and I think you have to live in the present and you can't live by big names. You can't live in the past. It doesn't matter what somebody did in an Olympic gold-medal game in the Olympics three years ago. Now is what matters."

I'm not going to pretend to know enough about the relative merits of each player. But if Briana Scurry was the better player, she should have been! in there the entire tournament. It's so, so simple.

FSU women's soccer

Spending the offseason adjusting to the departures of three All-American players would raise the stress level of most coaches, but Mark Krikorian has taken the losses in stride.
Before hitting the recruiting trail again, the Florida State soccer coach said his farewells to India Trotter, Kelly Rowland and Selin Kuralay, and managed not to shed a tear. He's never been one to sweat the small stuff, and he's certainly not afraid of change. He tinkered with his starting lineup throughout last season's run to the College Cup, and his players made him look like a genius in the process.

Mitts critical of Hamm, Foudy and Fawcett

"I didn't feel like I was a part of the team as much as I would have liked," said Mitts, 28.
Back then, I really didn't get to know the players off the field because we didn't do a whole lot of stuff together.
It took me a long time to feel comfortable. Now we spend time off the field and get to know each other. That's when you build friendships."

What is Pedrosa waiting for?

Pedrosa, a Honda rider ever since his 2001 125GP debut, was expected to re-sign several months ago - but a deal is still to be announced.

With the 2008 factory seats at Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Ducati now occupied, any slim chance that the 21-year-old former 125 and 250cc world champion might change brands has passed - leaving Pedrosa with little leverage in whatever he is holding out for from HRC.

The most obvious sticking points are money and tyres, with the latter rumoured to be behind Pedrosa's refusal to sign on the dotted line - as he seeks to persuade Honda to jump ship from Michelin to tyre manufacturer of the moment Bridgestone.

Whether that happens remains to be seen, but the most obvious location for a new Pedrosa deal is Honda's home Japanese Grand Prix on September 23.

If a deal isn't done at Motegi, then Pedrosa - the only Honda rider to win a race this year - and HRC really do have a problem...

Gibbs in trouble again

Herschelle Gibbs probably wishes he was in India instead of spending the morning behind bars.
Gibbs was arrested in the early hours of the morning on charges of alleged drunk driving, but has been released on R500 bail.
His court date has been set for June 27.
Gibbs' career has been tainted by several incidents on and off the field.

Must-Win for Chelsea

Chelsea must beat Newcastle at St James' Park tonight otherwise Manchester United will be crowned Premier League champions again. The Blues are now 3 points behind the leaders and have a fully fit squad. Newcastle approach the game unbeaten in their last 7 matches. United of course beat West Ham 4 - 1 at the weekend. Also 1 - 0 wins for Liverpool and Arsenal yesterday.

The heat is on!

American qualifiers Justin Hicks, above, and Kevin Streelman carded opening round 68's to be the surprise leaders after Thursday's first round at the US Open at Torrey Pines.
The heat will be well and truly on during round 2, with all the heavyweights within range. Ernie Els will be happy with a 70, Phil Mickleson is a danger man after an opening 71, and Tiger Woods recovered from 2 double-bogeys to shoot a 72.

Local teams preparing for new season

Local rivals Santos and Ajax are preparing for their up coming PSL season. Both teams performed really well previously. Ajax finished second three points ahead of Santos, with Supersport United being the eventual winners.

Santos Coach David Bright says they have not bought any big name players yet, they have signed young players with potential. They want to build the squad so they can continue with their good form into the new season. Bright says preparations are going well and believes his team can continue with their great form.

Ajax Cape Town's PRO Shooz Mekuto says we shouldn't expect too many changes this season as not much has changed in the team. He says the Urban Warriors are looking forward to kicking of the new spell. Mekuto expects this season to be a memorable one, he says no team will be a push over.

Damseaux Jnr Wins Swartland Rally

The Damseaux and Toyota partnership, synonymous for winning 74 national rallies and ten championships with Serge behind the wheel, took a new turn this weekend when Jean-Pierre Damseaux and co-driver Cobus Vrey extended the winning partnership with an aggressive, well controlled career first win.

It was a historic occasion for Serge and Jean-Pierre became the first father and son to win a round of the national rally championship. For JP, as he is known, the first victory came in only his second year in the top S2000 class.

The T! otal Evolution-backed Toyota RunX pair was on the pace from the first stage but had a panel-crunching incident in the first stage after going through a fence to avoid a herd of cows. Frustrated, Damseaux flattened a gate post later in the same stage and ended the first day's action 2nd overall, 20 seconds adrift of the rally leaders Jan Habig/Douglas Judd in a BP Volkswagen Polo.

Day two dawned bright and sunny although the stages were still extremely wet following incessant rain in the run up to the penultimate round of the Sasol SA Rally Championship.

Damseaux put the hammer down and pulled back six secon! ds in th e first stage of the day, taking the lead after the 48km long sixth stage, running on the faster but riskier soft tyre option. A third stage win saw Damseaux and Vrey with a 1 minute advantage, so backed off to preserve the car for the run back to the final stage in Cape Town.

"It was a bit of a gamble running wet tyres in the long stage, but fortunately for us the gamble paid off", said a jubilant Damseaux. "When we had a minute in hand, I backed off because there was only one gravel and one tar stage remaining. I'm really happy we've won because it's only our second year in a car that gives us the opportunity to win. It is a bonus that it happened down here in the Cape in front of a whole generation of Damseaux fans".

JP added: "S2000 is an amazing class to race in – there are nine of us trying to win, so make no mistake it's not easy. We've been quick all year but there have been quite a few annoying, niggly things that happened to us, so it's really! satisfying to finally pull it off".

Mohammed Moosa and Grant Martin were the first two wheel drive car home in their new Total Evolution Toyota Auris, claiming the Auris' first win in rallying with a brilliant 10th overall and first in class A6. The Auris beat the bigger-engined class A7 cars, where Chris de Wit/Dean Redelinghuys top-scored for Toyota with a podium place.

"I've never driven the Auris in the wet, so I had no idea how to set her up for the conditions or what to expect. The car is so easy to drive: it goes, stops and turns so well – it's ! brilliant"' Moosa said of his new car.

Rodney Visag! ie and C arolyn Swan claimed the class N3 title with a strong drive in the tricky conditions, taking their Total Evolution Toyota RunX to their third win of the season and heading a Toyota 1-2-3-4 in the class. Capetonian Duncan English/Rob Williams was the class runner up in another RunX while Abduraghman Amlay/Yusuf Ganief (Toyota RunX) finished ahead of title hopeful Kosta Koumantarakis/Lou Zietsman in a another RunX.

Riaan and Hester Erasmus wrapped up the class N2 titles with another strong showing, their 4th winning performance of the year.

Toyota Motorsport Manger Wammy Haddad summed up the weekend: "It's is an excellent result for JP. The weekend was pretty good all round - but expensive. We lost two engines because of all the water. The Auris has shown well in class A6 and will be a great platform for the next generation of privateer cars".

Cobras Spinner Backs Proteas Seam Attack

Nashua Cape Cobras spinner Claude Henderson believes the Proteas' unconfirmed decision to bowl Monde Zondeki against Bangladesh in the second test is an indication of their plans for Australia.

It's understood the Cobras fast bowler will take the field at Centurion tomorrow, which rules him out for the Cobras MTN Domestic Championship match against the Gestetner Diamond Eagles on Friday.

Henderson believes it's the right call.

"The Aussies have struggled as well with their spinners, so I think they're going to prepare nice quick, bouncy wickets. So in that regard I think Harris will be the main spinner to try and keep one side tight and let the quickies run from the other side."

"Maybe it's good to give Monde a run as well. He needs to bowl and he's the type of bowler that if he gets overs under his belt he'll get better and better."

SA desert runner back on track

Ryan Sandes is about to embark on his first race of the year. The endurance trail runner will take part in the Namibia Desert race which begins on Sunday.

The event is part of the Racing the Planet series which takes place in various locations around the world. Competitors run around 250 kilometers in the race's seven day duration.

Sandes began his endurance trail running career in 2006 and was the winner of two major desert marathons in 2008. He won both the Gobi desert race in China as well as the notorious Sahara.

He has never run in Namibia before and Sandes says he will tread wearily.

"Every race is different so you cannot be too confident. It's in a new place I have never run their before so I am not 100 percent sure of what to expect with regards to the temperature and foot conditions. The start is going to be at the Fish River Canyon which won't be easy."

Despite his good performances last year, Sandes says a win at this race is the last thing on his mind right now.

"Going into a race like this your first aim is to just finish. I will see how the first few days go and then take if from there. I am quite new to the sport but I think that I have gotten a lot stronger in the last year."

Chinese Grand Prix: Points of Interest

We have two races left in the 2008 Formula One season and this weekend we have the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit. We have many potential story lines but these can not be ignored given the state of the title fight.

1. Fernando Alonso and Renault. Renault have been on a tear in recent races spearheaded by Fernando Alonso. Renault have amassed 35 points in the last 4 races; that total is more than Ferrari, McLaren and BMW during the same span. So, with the proven increase in performance, can Alonso make it 3 in a row?

2. Robert Kubica. He sits 3rd in the World Championship fig! ht and sits 12 points behind championship leader Hamilton and 7 points behind Massa. Given the mistakes and penalties and squandering of points Kubica can gain alot of ground on these two. We saw it last year with Raikkonen.

3. Heikki Kovalainen. He is in one of the best cars and is in danger of being overhauled by Alonso in the championship standings. He sits in 6th and 3 points ahead of Alonso and has only scored points once in the last 4 races. He has been rather non-descript this season with 1 race win and 3 podiums. He needs to be a quality number 2 driver and take points away from Hamilton's rivals. He certainly has the car, but does he have the talent?

4. Race Stewards. This season, particularly in the last several races the stewards have had an impact on the results. Given the tight championship battle, a steward's decision can hand or take away the championship for a driver. So, the question for the Chinese Grand Prix is what role will the ste! wards play?

Rafa Benitez To Be Given £12m Transfer Budget To Rescue Fading Title Dreams

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez will be handed a £12million New Year transfer budget after all, but that is still well short of what he would need to attract top players as he bids to salvage the club's fading Premier League title dream.

The Liverpool manager's spending power has been a contentious issue since the arrival of Tom Hicks and George Gillett, but Anfield's American owners will back him with more funds when the window reopens in January.

With three defeats from their first eight league games leaving little scope for more slip-ups, Benitez will welcome the chance to bo! lster his squad and is already scouring the market for potential recruits.

Several emerging Spanish players are under review, as well as Lazio striker Goran Pandev, as he looks to strengthen on the flanks and up front.

For all the owners' support, though, he could face further frustration. Macedonia front-runner Pandev was rated at £17m when Arsenal and Tottenham were linked with him in the summer.

Inter Milan are favourites to sign him in January.

Even so, Benitez still views the funds as an encouraging step forward after playing down the defeats by Tottenham, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Gillett is believed to be unhappy that a supposedly private conversation between him and a member of a supporters' group, which found its way on to a fans' website, portrayed his thoughts as being anti-Benitez when he also referred to his 'genius'.

Gillett responded to a question about Liverpool's start to this season by saying! : 'In the last 18 months, we have invested £128m, on top of wh! at has c ome in. That means it should be getting better. If it is not getting better, it's not Gillett and Hicks. It's the manager, it's the scouting.'

Benitez, who prides himself on his coaching network, is thought to be not unduly perturbed by the comments and is more concerned about proving his theory that the League is open enough this season for a side to absorb three early defeats.

Lisandro Poses Threat To Reds

"Lisandro is better than Rooney," says the iconic Portuguese defender Jorge Costa in a matter-of-fact voice.

The former Porto captain is on a speakerphone and has been on the road for at least four hours, so there is a temptation to put his claim down to weariness.

However, the man known as "the tank" during his playing days goes on to reassert his belief with the conviction of one of his uncompromising tackles, as if to make sure nothing has been lost in translation.

"I know Lisandro very well. He's a top player. He plays like Wayne Rooney but his technique is better. He is capable of being! one of the best strikers in Europe," Costa tells BBC Sport.

"He has the quality to play in England, Spain or Italy."

When the draw was made for the Champions League group stages at the end of August, Liverpool fans could have been forgiven for doing a little hop and a skip in glee.

Olympique Lyonnais, arguably the strongest of their three opponents, had recently finished a disappointing third in Ligue 1 and, over the summer, had sold the outrageously talented Karim Benzema and playmaker Juninho.

One French journalist even warned that the club was in danger of "slipping inexorably towards mediocrity".

But Benzema's departure to Real Madrid for about £35m heralded the arrival of a diminutive Argentinian striker for a little more than half that price and Lisandro Lopez, known as "the warrior" or, more commonly, as "licha bianca" (the one who wears you down) has quickly won the hearts of Lyon fans with his dynamism, passio! n and instinctive goalscoring ability.

The club's r! ecord si gning received a standing ovation after a 90th-minute equaliser on his league debut against Le Mans and a hat-trick against Anderlecht in the second-leg of the Champions League play-offs had the fans on their feet and chanting his name.

The three goals in Brussels were all very different: a delightful chip over the goalkeeper, a thrusting run to beat two defenders and finish at the near post, and a powerful shot from outside the box.

Indeed, only three months into his French "sojourn" and a poll of football supporters in France has deemed Lisandro to be a better player than his predecessor Benzema.

His opponents, too, have been quick to make their admiration known. "I love his rage," extolled Paris Saint-Germain striker Mevlut Erding in L'Equipe.

Shy off the pitch and keen to avoid the glitz that often follows footballers, the 26-year-old has played down his lofty status, insisting he has "much work ahead".

Yet should he! play at Anfield on Tuesday, and in whatever position - he has so far been deployed as a lone striker, wide on the left and behind a striker - Costa predicts a taxing night for Jamie Carragher and co.

Asked how Liverpool's defence, which has recently been uncharacteristically porous, could stifle the Argentina international, Costa pauses before laughing: "I wouldn't want to be playing against him. Liverpool's defence will find him tricky.

"He's not a typical number nine. He plays in the centre or on the wing and has a special gift for scoring goals. He is not very tall but he is a good header of the ball."

Lisandro's arrival in France's culinary capital was no knee-jerk reaction to the departure of the home-grown Benzema - it was a transfer two years in the making.

On 6 November 2007, Remi Garde, then a Lyon scout and now a member of the club's coaching staff, travelled to Portugal to look at a Buenos Aires-born attacker, who was ! starting to find his feet at Porto after an indifferent start ! to his c areer in Europe.

With 12 minutes remaining, he outmuscled and outjumped the Marseille defence to direct Ricardo Quaresma's cross into the top corner for the winning goal. The stadium erupted and Garde headed home to inform his employers he had spotted a star.

"He played fantastically," recalls Garde, a former Arsenal midfielder. "He was running everywhere, much like he did against Manchester United at Old Trafford last season. He was very impressive.

"I watched him a lot last season, too. He works hard for the team. He perseveres, much like Rooney. If he loses the ball he'll start again. If he misses a shot he'll try again. He won't let it get him down.

"We knew that attracting a player like Lopez would take a long time. He's just at the start of the story of his Lyon career, but he's doing very well. He works for the team, has speed and is strong mentally."

Lyon spent about £70m in the summer on rejuvenating a squad whi! ch had to come to terms with the end of their Ligue 1 dominance (since 2002 no club other than 'Les Gones' had won the title). As well as Lisandro, Aly Cissokho was purchased from Porto, Brazilian Michel Bastos came in from Lille, and France forward Bafetimbi Gomis arrived from St Etienne.

The quality of the signings was not questioned - only Lionel Messi, Steven Gerrard and Miroslav Klose were more prolific than Lisandro in last season's Champions League - but Lyon coach Claude Puel has admitted to being surprised at how quickly the new faces have "hit it off".

Lyon, who are leading Ligue 1 and Group E of the Champions League, will head across the Channel full of confidence, even though they have won only once on English soil.

Garde believes the new signings have brought cohesion and defensive stability to the team. "There is probably a better balance between all the players, which has not been the case in previous seasons," he says.
"Of course, the departure of two key players was a big lo! ss for u s. It's a surprise that Lisandro has fitted in so quickly, but we knew he had a strong temperament. I think he is in life as he is on the pitch: he fights for everything and has done everything to try to settle in.

"Karim was the child of the house. He was able to make the difference himself, create a chance by himself. He was able to play with others and do a lot more assists. He was a big talent, but the team relied too heavily on Karim's talents. We're a different team now. When we don't have the ball we work hard to gain the ball - defensively we are much better."

Liverpool have been less than inspiring in Europe this season. A laborious 1-0 victory over Debrecen was followed by a 2-0 defeat in Fiorentina, but Garde refuses to see the Merseysiders' recent failings as a plus for Lyon.

"All the Liverpool players will be up for this match and will be motivated," he says. "They may not be in the best form, but with a club as big as Liverpool ! you are always worried that they are going to wake up and bite you.

"Anfield is a wonderful place to play football. It has a magnificent atmosphere, the kind you dream of when you are a young player. You can feel that all the fans are behind the team in red, but we will look forward to it.

"We have to be careful when we play such a big club. We'll have chances to score, but in this kind of game errors will determine the result. Both teams will have one or two chances. We will give everything to win."

Liverpool Boss Benitez Disappointed With Defeat But Impressed With Aquilani

Liverpool were eliminated from the League Cup due to a 2-1 loss sustained at Arsenal's Ashburton Grove home, but Rafael Benitez has insisted that the defeat will not dilute the feel-good factor that engulfed Anfield following the Manchester United win at the weekend.

Pass-master Fran Merida opened the scoring in the first-half with a long-range effort, but the visitors levelled the game with an equally impressive shot from Emiliano Insua. Nicklas Bendtner, though, struck the winner five minutes into the second half.

Benitez's side could have perhaps had a penalty toward the game's conclusion, as substitute Alberto Aquilani - who made his first appearance in Liverpool colours after his recovery from injury - was perceived to have won a penalty when his bicycle kick struck Bendtner's hands.

"I haven't seen the replay but I've been told it was a penalty, you cannot change things now though,! " Benitez said post-game. "We saw some quality, though.

"We lost, but played well. Both teams were attacking and creating chances, so it was good for the fans, but bad for us because we lost."

He continued: "We don't lose the feel-good factor. We changed players - they showed energy and passion."

Regarding the debut of Aquilani, a £20 million summer signing from Serie A side Roma, Benitez said: "I think he showed quality.

"Match fitness is only something he can improve by playing. We can see the signs today, two or three good passes. Every day will be a little bit better."

Duhamel on '200' pole

By John Hopkins

Miguel Duhamel claimed his second consecutive Daytona 200 pole in qualifying at Daytona International Speedway today.

The Montreal rider waited until the final two minutes to set a time of one minute, 40.928 seconds on his Honda CBR600RR, edging the Yamaha YZF-R6 of Jason DiSalvo. DiSalvo, the pacesetter in practice, managed a best lap of 1:41.015.

DiSalvo's factory Yamaha teammate Eric Bostrom will start third in Saturday's feature race while Jake Zemke completes the front row on the second factory Honda CBR600RR.

Next best Canadian after Duhamel was Granby, QC's Pascal Picotte, who was 13th fastest with a time of 1:44.332 aboard the Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R6. Picotte's Buell entry, in the hands of Steve Crevier, qualified 16th at 1:44.604.

Wellesley, ON's Bill Card will start Saturday's 200 in the 29th grid slot after setting a fastest lap of 1:46.801 o! n another Yamaha YZF-R6. Oliver Jervis was 37th fastest at 1:47.302 and Jean Paul Tache 59th with a 1:49.825, both riding Kawasaki ZX-6RRs.

In other Daytona action today, Mat Mladin started off defence of his AMA Superbike title in style by claiming pole for Saturday's race with a time of 1:37.075 on the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000. Teammate Ben Spies was second, Parts Unlimited Ducati rider Ben Bostrom third on a Ducati 999R and Duhamel fourth aboard his Honda CBR1000RR.

In Daytona race action, Jamie Hacking outduelled Yamaha teammate DiSalvo to take the Superstock win aboard his YZF-R1. Aaron Yates completed the podium on his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Roger Lee Hayden took his Kawasaki ZX-6RR to the Supersport win ahead of Hacking and teammate Tommy Hayden. Picotte was eighth and Card 26th.

Mock Draft for the Ages

I talk a lot of smack about ESPN, but I like their page 2 stories. They are usually a little off the wall. They have posted a mock draft for all time. They only used players that were picked 1-5, and they were picked based on team need and college credentials. I am only posting this because I loved the Bengals selection....the one and only Tony Mandarich. The Bengals described him as the "can't miss prospect" whom they are depending on protecting Carson Palmer. Ahh, its so true. You know thats who we would take. Read the whole article here.

What could have been

Okay, maybe its not a dream team. And I realize in today's baseball where the size of your market generally dictates how much you can spend, that this probably would not be possible. But, here is the team the Reds could have right now.

Could this team compete?

Great story on Patrick Patterson

If you get a chance today to sit down a read an article you should take a minute to read this article about Patrick Patterson. Patterson, who is entering his Junior season for the Kentucky Wildcats, has used his "celebrity" in Lexington for a very good cause. After reading this story I have gained a great deal of respect for this young man.

Check it out here.

Red Sox will be okay with Ortiz on DL

Boston fans, calm down. Your beloved Red Sox are going to be just fine. The loss of David Ortiz is as debilitating as possible in terms of affecting a lineup, don't get me wrong. But let's face it: at this point, it may not even matter.

The Sox are hitting .283 as a club, which is 2nd only to the Cubs in all of MLB and best in the AL. Rather impressive, especially considering that Ortiz is in the midst of his worst offensive season since joining Boston in 2003. He's on pace to match his HR and RBI totals of last year, which were easily the lowest since that first year in '03. Yet his overall power is down, on pace for only 27 doubles and currently batting just .252. While you can argue that he got hot in May, batting .318 and raising his average from .198 after April, it's been the contributions from the rest of the lineup that have been significant.

Take Kevin Youkilis for example, who has slugged nine homeruns and 35 RBI's while batting .305. Or Manny! Ramirez, who has 12 bombs, 39 RBI and a .296 average after hitting career homerun 501 last night. There's Mike Lowell, last year's World Series MVP and perhaps regular season team MVP who has returned from a wrist injury. Since coming off the DL, the third baseman has hit .305 with seven homeruns and 25 RBI in 34 games. And Jacoby Ellsbury has been electrifying, batting .287 out of the leadoff spot, stealing 27 bases in 30 attempts and contributing 12 extra base hits, as well. Long story short, the Sox has five starters hitting over .285 (Youkilis, Ramirez, Drew, Ellsbury and Lowell) with two others batting .279 (Pedroia and Lugo).

And while the loss of Ortiz will certainly put more strain, pressure and importance on the at bats from these guys, I don't see them slipping with Big Papi in the dumps. Not to say Boston is better without Ortiz by any means, but I think the team's improvement in other areas will, to a certain degree, counteract the significant loss i! n power and balance things out.

Ramirez should move! to the DH role, opening up a spot in left. Ellsbury could easily shift to left while Coco Crisp moves back into center. I think this is the best option, as Crisp was incredible defensively last year and should have won a Gold Glove over Torii Hunter, who has essentially been grandfathered in as the perennial Gold Glove CF. And while the team gets a little thin with the OF corps, Jeff Bailey is a big right-handed bat currently with the club, while Brandon Moss could see a call-up if necessary. I'd actually like to see it. He's hitting .405 over his last 10 games in Pawtucket, and had a three-homer game last week. Jed Lowrie is another guy Theo could call on to fill in as a reserve in case the team's resident patient, JD Drew, goes down with another case of vertigo or a yeast infection.

Regardless of whom they bring in, if anyone, to fill that need, the Red Sox are going to see a significant boost in speed. Having Crisp, Lugo and Ellsbury in the same lineup night in and ni! ght out will give opposing batteries migraines, and I expect to see a variation of small to come from Terry Francona's club. Crisp only has seven swipes on the season so far, but that should skyrocket over the next couple weeks because he'll be playing every day as opposed to catching the short end of a platoon situation. The Sox have never done much in terms of bunting over runners and I don't expect that to happen now either. But with a lineup that is consistently making contact throughout, we'll see more hit-and-runs, stolen bases, runners moving over on balls the other way, etc. With the speed on the base paths, balls in the gap will easily score runs and if guys like Crisp, Ellsbury and Lugo can force a throw to the plate, help move the hitter up an extra base, as well.

As I said, I don't think the team is better off without Ortiz, nor do I think it'll change its approach. But I do think we'll see more speed, better defensive play, and continued success unti! l Ortiz returns.

Much like the depth in pitching, B! oston ha s a "problem" in that it has significant depth with hitters. And much like Masterson and Colon have answered the call with injuries to Clay Bucholz and Daisuke Matsuzaka, I think the hitters in that clubhouse, collectively, will find a way to do the same in the absence of Ortiz.

Another reason the Sox should be fine without Ortiz is the aforementioned depth at pitching. Josh Beckett is slowly returning to form, while Jon Lester has been much improved over the past month, especially with his no-hitter against the Royals. Despite Dice-K and Bucholz both being on the shelf, Colon and Masterson are certainly contributing beyond expectations, and Tim Wakefield has been his steady self. It's not exactly a murderer's row of starting pitchers, but all are serviceable and capable of contributing six strong innings. The question will be if the bullpen can hold a lead or stop a threat and get the ball to Papelbon. Manny Delcarmen, Craig Hansen and David Aardsma have all thro! w well over their last few outings, and with Okajima struggling, each will need to continue this recent run of success if the Sox will be able to stay afloat.

While the Rays will be a tough test at Fenway the next three games, the Sox then move to Seattle and Baltimore. At home, they should easily take 2 of 3 in both. Then it's on to interleague play and series at both Cincinnati and Philadelphia. Because they're in NL parks, Ortiz effectiveness here would have decreased anyway with there not being a DH. By then, we should have a clear perspective on the health of his wrist and a more definitive timetable, as well. Papi's bat will certainly be welcome by the end of the month, when the Red Sox embark on a string of games against St. Louis, Arizona, Houston, Tampa Bay and New York.

So let's give him his time to rest on the 15-day DL before jumping off the Tobin, because depth and scheduling are playing into the Sox favor right now.

BJal's Lock du the last two jours

I've been sick as a dog and completely forgot to post BJal's lock du jour yesterday. He did actually take Miami (+1) against the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets!!! In fact, he was so excited about the pick he sent it to me yesterday morning at 6:54am...on a holiday. Unbelievable. Yea I wasn't sleeping. At least he got it right, unlike Rex Ryan, who didn't get it right when it comes to using timeouts during a critical defensive drive at the end of an NFL game.

For tonight, BJal will take Louisiana Monroe (-1.5) over Arkansas State. I'd type more about this, but I'm coughing non-stop and it's taken me about 10 minutes to type this friggin post. I'm going to go back to being sick. Focker, out.

BJal's lock du jour: Louisiana Monroe (-1.5)
Overall record: 3-4

Sampdoria 1-0 Inter Milan

Sampdoria moved to the top of Serie A after shocking defending champions Inter Milan with their fifth win in six games.

A goal from Giampaolo Pazzini in the 72nd minute was enough to decide a very tight, yet entertaining encounter at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, inflicting Inter's first defeat of the season.

Both sides had made a positive start to the season, with Inter dropping only two points so far and Samp seeing their four-game winning streak ended by Fiorentina! in midweek.

The prize for the winner was top spot in Serie A for at least 24 hours and the game was understandably tense.

Although there were very few chances in the first half, the quality on offer was very high.

In fact, both sides were cancelling each other out, with two of the league's strongest attacks - and both coaches sprang surprises in their starting XIs by including three forwards - tamed by the meanest of defences.

The first chance did not arrive until the 22nd minute when Samp goalkeeper Luca Castellazzi showed indecision in allowing Diego Milito to reach a long ball on the goal-line.

The former Genoa striker's pull-back was met by Esteban Cambiasso and Castellazzi redeemed himself by saving the Argentinian's shot.

Angelo Palombo had the home side's first chance in the 28th minute but he failed to make good enough contact as the ball landed invitingly for a volley 10 yards from goal.

To end the half, Reto Ziegle! r sent in a 25-yard shot that curled at the last minute to tes! t Julio Cesar, who preferred to punch the ball clear rather than attempt to catch it.

Inter made a brighter start to the second half, with Milito dragging his shot across the face of goal from a difficult angle.

Mario Balotelli's 56th-minute shot took a deflection and Castellazzi was only able to parry the ball towards Milito, but he slipped on a very difficult pitch as he tried to convert the rebound.

Samp had a strong claim for a penalty turned down by referee Nicola Rizzoli when David Santon appeared to push the young midfielder to the floor as he looked to cut into the penalty area.

The game was finally starting to open up, with Samuel Eto'o volleying just wide at one end before Pazzini put the home side ahead at the other.

He was given a simple tap-in from seven yards out as the Inter defence fell asleep when Daniele Mannini sent in a low cross from the right.

The Nerazzurri laid siege to the Samp goal in search of an equaliser in the f! inal 10 minutes and they thought they had found it in the 84th minute when Ricardo Quaresma's shot deflected off Lucio into the back of the goal, but the Brazilian defender was in an offside position.

Castellazzi then denied Lucio what would have been a perfectly valid goal in stoppage time, pushing his direct free-kick wide of the post to secure all three points for the Blucerchiati.

Salzburg 2-0 Villarreal

Salzburg's dream start to the Europa League group stage continued as they claimed the prized scalp of Villarreal.

Having shocked Lazio with a 2-1 victory in Rome in their opening Group G match, Salzburg created another stir this evening as they downed last season's Champions League quarter-finalists 2-0 thanks to goals in either half from Marc Janko and Somen Tchoyi.

Janko also scored his side's winner against Lazio three minutes into injury-time at the Stadio Olim! pico after Salzburg had fought back from a goal down.

For Villarreal, the defeat is the latest setback in a dismal start to the campaign that has seen them take just two points from their opening five Primera Division matches.

The Yellow Submarine's only success so far this season has come in Europe, when they beat Levski Sofia 1-0 in their first group match, and Ernesto Valverde's side would have been hoping the return to the Europa League would do them good.

However, despite Giuseppe Rossi going close a couple of times early on, the visitors found themselves behind inside the opening 20 minutes when Janko got on the end of Christoph Leitgeb's free-kick to slot home into the bottom corner of the net.

That would have dented Villarreal's confidence and although they tried to bounce back before the break, Salzburg held their advantage as the teams left the pitch at the interval.

The Austrian side had caused problems going forward in the firs! t half, and it was a similar story after the break with Villar! real goa lkeeper Diego Lopez doing well to twice deny Tchoyi and Janko.

Valverde threw on club record signing Nilmar for Joseba Llorente with 15 minutes remaining and the Brazil international tested home goalkeeper Eddie Gustafsson almost immediately.

It was not going to be the Primera Division outfit's night though, and Salzburg wrapped up another famous win when Tchoyi fired into the roof of the net from 12 yards following a pass from Andreas Ulmer.

Villarreal next face a testing trip to Lazio as they look to get their European campaign back on track while in-form Salzburg host group minnows Levski Sofia.

T&T flair clips Eagles' wings

Trinidad and Tobago got the better of the Diamond Eagles by 24 runs to stay on in Hyderabad for their semi-final encounter.

Adrian Barath (63) led a stunning power-hitting show as Trinindad & Tobago breezed into the semifinals of the Airetl CL T20.

The unbeaten Caribbean side rattled up 213 for four, highest score of the tournament, and left Diamond Eagles with an almost im! possible task of achieving the target in 14.2 overs to qualify for the next stage.

Barath, playing his first match of the tournament, almost batted through the innings and shared two solid partnerships with William Perkins (35) and Lendl Simmons (40) to set up the stage for an exciting finish after opting to bat.

Navin Stewart (33 off 11) and Kieron Pollard (23) provided the late firework as the good work done at the top was carried on by the middle-order.

Needing 16.5 runs per over, ! the South African side made an audacious start by extracting 7! 2 runs i n the first five overs, but the task was just too tough to manage.

Rilee Rossouw hit a scintillating 44 off just 19 balls and the following batsmen too fought their heart out but Eagles ultimately could manage 189 for five in 20 overs.

Morne van Wyk (25), Boeta Dippenaar (33) and Dillon du Preez (35) batted beautifully in their aggressive knocks but their effort proved insufficient to demolish the target.

New South Wales Blues had qualified from League A early in the day after beating ! Somerset by six wickets.

Earlier, Barath, who replaced Darren Bravo in the side, was jittery in the beginning, but once he got his rhythm he was at his destructive best.

Barath played second fiddle in the 66-run opening wicket partnership with Perkins and was magnificent in his 76-run stand for the second wicket with Simmons, who contributed a quick fire 40 off 25 balls.

Before being bowled by Dillon du Preez, Barath entertained the crowd with four fours and equal number of sixes while Perkins decorated his innings with three fours and three shots over the fence.

Stewart's scintillating 11-ball 33 at number five before Kieron Pollard's 23-run cameo took the match away from Eagles.

Stewart put on an amazing display of power-hitting in the 19th over when he smashed du Preez for 26 runs, ruthlessly hitting him! for three sixes and two fours.

At the start, Perkins, who has been in ominous form, yet again began solidly hitting Victor Mpistang for a four and a six in the very first over of the match.

Barath though was living dangerously as he attempted many shots off Cornelius de Villiers but missed all.

Perkins was on song on the other side as he smashed Victor for an off-side six, followed it up with a four and hoicked another six in his next over.

Barath also got into action, went for a hardly slashed cut off Preez and just managed to clear the ropes at third man and then hit Ryan McLaren for two boundaries.

The Caribbean openers made the most of the power-play as they amassed 64 runs in the first six overs.

Thandi Tshabalala, the off-spinner, brought a huge ! relief for his side when he bowled Perkins, who slashed one hard but missed the shot completely and the partnership was broken.

But the smile on his teammates' faces was momentary as next man in Simmons hit the first ball for a massive six and packed the next ball for a point boundary.

Barath and Simmons kept punishing the South African bowlers and by 11 overs Trinidad & Tobago had scored 100 runs.

Barath steered Alan Kroger to third man to get to his fifty and Simmons hit the same bowler for two more boundaries to raise their fifty-run partnership.

de Villiers was brought back into the attack but the paceman hardly got any respect as he was creamed for 21 runs in that over by the duo.

< strong>Ryan McLaren provided the breakthrough when he disturbed the timber of Simmons but by then he had done his job as he cracked six boundaries and a six in his knock.

Pollard continued with the way he has been batting and hit two sixes before being caught by Alan Cruger off Ryan Bailey.

Plymouth Argyle 1 Ipswich Town 1

The Championship football game between Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town at Home Park on Saturday Oct 24, 2009.

When you've made as many enemies over the course of your career as Roy Keane has, you need some powerful friends.

In his attempt to prise Ipswich off the foot of the Championship table, Keane has admitted appealing to divine inspiration, and in a scruffy affair on the Devon coast, his prayers were finally answered in the form of a slice of outrag! eous good fortune. While not exactly a stairway to heaven, Jon Stead's second-half equaliser has probably prevented a far worse plague from visiting Keane's house.

Ipswich have now gone winless for 14 games, the only team in England yet to record a victory. The fans and the players are still behind Keane. More importantly, so are the board, who rallied to the Irishman's defence this week. But once a slide has been identified, discontent can foment exponentially. At what point does a drama become a crisis? Keane is about to find out.

If the Irishman felt like a man reprieved, though, he was not showing it. Castigating his strikers for not putting away their chances, he admitted he was embroiled in a fight for survival. "We're in the bottom three and we've got a battle ahead," he said. "But we're creating chances, we just have to learn to grind out results."

In fairness, Ipswich were good value for! their point. As has happened so often this season, though,! they we re pummelled by a soft goal. Rory Fallon's hopeful pull-back found Carl Fletcher, who shot low and left-footed from 20 yards. It was a nothing goal, but one that meant everything.

Plymouth, with former Portman Road cherub Paul Mariner as their new head coach, were making the telling passes and the surging runs, Ipswich looking short on ideas. And yet. Out of nowhere, Gary Sawyer left a routine back pass unacceptably short and Stead gleefully dribbled the ball around Romain Larrieu to equalise. Mysterious ways indeed.

Second from bottom and carrying his own almighty burden, Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock was vexed further by the late dismissal of Darcy Blake for a feisty lunge on Jon Walters. "I thought it was very soft," he said. "We're considering an appeal."

Boris Becker: Im struggling to understand why Andre Agassi wanted to confess

Boris Becker is shocked, confused, and saddened after learning about Agassi Agassi's past drug-taking.

Image is everything, as Andre Agassi was once paid a lot of money to say in a television commercial.

Boris Becker has disclosed that his view of the Las Vegan has changed for the worse after his contemporary's confession that he used crystal meth.

"I'm the last person to throw stones, as there have been some difficult times in my own life, but to hear that he took crystal meth, that certainly puts a whole ne! w light on Andre," Becker said, "and it's not a beautiful light."

Shocked, more than a little confused, and saddened is how Becker feels after learning how Agassi snorted the addictive stimulant in 1997, and then, after failing a dope test, dodged a ban by lying to the men's tour with a letter claiming he had drunk a "spiked soda".

"I'm saddened by what Andre has revealed. Tennis didn't need this," said Becker, who suggested that Agassi's admission in his autobiography was "probably the most shocking thing I've heard in tennis".

Becker, who at 41 is a couple of years older than Agassi, cannot understand what motivated his old rival to discuss the "tidal wave of euphoria" brought on by taking crystal meth. To Becker's mind, the story has damaged both Agassi's and the sport's image.

Though Becker disclosed in his own memoir that for a time in his career he was reliant on sleeping pills, which he sometimes wash! ed down with whisky, he said he has never used illegal drug! s.

Agassi took crystal meth with his assistant, Slim, who persuaded the 1992 Wimbledon champion that it would make him feel "like Superman, dude"; Becker said that he tried to avoid bad company during his years of playing professional tennis.

More than anything, Becker sounded bewildered as to why Agassi had been so honest in his book about his drugs and his lies.

"I'm struggling to get my head around why Andre would want to confess to something so damaging as taking drugs and then getting away with it? Why would he want to be so brutally honest?

"I'm really surprised that he would want to discuss such a private part of his life, to talk about such a bad period in his life. I'm sure this will help to sell his book. He doesn't need the money, though. He's a rich man," Becker said.

"Andre has a very settled life now, a very happy and structured life, and now he has admitted this. I wasn't pleased when I he! ard what Andre had admitted to. I'm very sad. That was his problem at that time, but why share it with everyone?"

The German, who played Agassi 14 times on the tour, including twice at Wimbledon, said that the American's public image would suffer.

"I like the guy, I want that to be clear. I think he's a character and he was a great competitor. We had some close matches. He's become a great man. He's a great father, and he has put a lot of time and money into his community in Las Vegas. But his revelations are bound to change how people see him," Becker said.

"There have been stories over the years about some tennis players taking drugs, but maybe they were just stories, and now Andre, a big star, has been so open about what he took and how he lied to avoid punishment. I had no idea about this before. I'm struggling to think of anything else in tennis that comes close to this."

Agassi's image is not the! only one suffering; the ATP's is as well. Becker said that! the sto ry had "implications" for men's tennis, as the ATP administered the anti-doping tests at that time.

"Andre didn't just take drugs, he also tested positive for drugs and then got away with it, and that's not good at all for tennis, especially for the governing bodies. People are going to be thinking, 'How could this happen? How could he get away with this?'

"If it had been made public in 1997 that Andre was using drugs, his career, and his life, would have been very different. He wouldn't be where he is today.

Maybe his career would not have survived if everyone knew that he had taken drugs, and if he was banned from the tour for a while. But no one knew until now, and it was after he took crystal meth that he played some of the best tennis of his life," Becker said. "He won many grand slams after that."

As the World Anti-Doping Agency has an eight-year statute of limitations, Agassi will probably not be pu! nished for his confession. "I don't think that Andre should be punished for what he did," Becker said. "It's too many years ago. Andre is a clever guy, so I'm sure he knew what the legal situation would be before he wrote the book."

Becker does not believe that there is a culture in the modern men's game of players chopping up, rolling up, snorting and smoking, between matches.

"I don't think that recreational drugs use is common on the tennis circuit now. I don't imagine that guys like Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray are having more than the occasional beer, and maybe a cigar as well, after a big win.

"Everyone knows now that if you go crazy on a Saturday night, if it gets messy, there's a chance you will be tested on Monday morning, and then you are going to be in big trouble, because you're going to test positive.

"The testing has got tougher in recent years. I don't think that the top players woul! d be so stupid."

Narcotics were never part of Becker! 's tenni s life. "I was never offered drugs when I was on the tour. I didn't hang around with those sorts of people. When I was a young player, my manager, Ion Tiriac, used to give me a scary look if there was even a beer on the table."

Meanwhile Rafael Nadal has expressed shock that the ATP did not take action over Agassi's admission that he took drugs in 1997 and lied to avoid a ban.

"If the ATP covered for Agassi at the time then I think that's dreadful," the world No 2 said. He added that "cheats should be punished".

Roger Federer, the world No 1, said: "It was a shock when I heard the news. I am disappointed and I hope there are no more such cases in future."

QUI Massannunziata: riecco Bellusci, a parte Biagianti e sciacca

I ragazzi devono soltanto continuare a giocare tranquilli e spensierati,
cercando di proseguire su questa strada».
